Risk Capital
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Briarwood Publications, Inc (01 October, 1998)
Authors: James Lancaster and William J. Piniarski
Average review score:

More, please!
Mr. Lancaster's first book is a compendium of short stories centered around the world of international high finance. The book's well-developed and interesting characters face a variety of ethical challenges and, in the main, fail miserably. It's just as we knew all along--finance is a profession overrun with self-centered and amoral get-rich-quick artists. Though the book pulls no punches, the reader is still drawn to the humanity of its characters, warts and all. In sum, a good read.

Intrigue and Intriguing
What a wonderful read! I was captivated by the imaginative plots and the exotic settings of this financial thriller. I also learned so much about the world of finance in language that was easy to understand. The John Grisham of the world of finance!

Successful Fundraising : A Complete Handbook for Volunteers and Professionals
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Trade (01 November, 1999)
Author: Joan Flanagan
Average review score:

Great book!
I'm not a professional fundraiser, but I plan to become involved in nonprofits, and this book was great! I know of some nonprofits that get all of their money from corporate donations and then complain about not having enough money. This isn't the way to do it, according to Ms. Flanagan. In order to be a successful fundraiser, you need to ask, ask, ask, and you need to provide many different ways for different people to give. Flanagan goes into many aspects of the game, including how to send follow up letters, when to ask, how often to ask, and different ways of making it easy to get big gifts. I especially liked the way she talks about the psychology of rich people and poor people, and how both tend to give in different ways. She tells us never to make decisions for givers--just ask, present them with the different options, and let them decide. Great advice.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get involved with charity. The marginal profit from the first day will probably cover the cost of this book many times over.

A great resource
There are now more than 1 million nonprofit organizations in the United States. The fundraising industry provides one in every ten jobs and is one of the
fastest-growing segments of the economy. In Successful Fundraising, nationally recognized expert Joan Flanagan gives readers the information they need to capture a
fair share of available fundraising dollars. Community volunteers and professional fundraisers alike will find helpful tips and advice on time-proven fundraising
techniques and the most profitable new ways to successfully raise money.

Are you looking to raise $1,000-or $1,000,000-for a particular cause, group, or charity? Successful Fundraising by Joan Flanagan will arm you with the information you
need to capture your organization's fair share of available fundraising dollars.

Whether you are a community volunteer or a professional fundraiser, expert Joan Flanagan offers helpful tips and advice cm gaining access to funds, building
relationships with donors, raising more money in a shorter period of time, and developing a more productive fundraising organization.

Packed with real-litc examples from the author's extensive fundraising experience, this essential handbook is complete with planning guidelines, sample worksheets and
timetables, and all-new information on using the Internet, F-mail, websites, and on-line auctions as fundraising tools. It also includes expanded sections that cover
working with celebrities to raise funds and winning corporate dollars. All the tools you need to plan, create, and execute a successful fundraising effort are included in
this comprehensive guide.

Joan Flanagan can make you a success!
Successful Fundraising is a great resource for non-profit agencies! It is very easy to read, straightforward, and actually a fun read too! Joan gives great examples and stories to illustrate her points.

I recently had the opportunity to attend one of Joan's courses - and she is just as wonderful and helpful in person. She presents the daunting tasks of fundraising in simple language, common sense and humor.

This book should be the "bible" of every non-profit fundraiser!

Welcome to Hell: Letters & Writings from Death Row
Published in Hardcover by Northeastern University Press (May, 1997)
Authors: Jan Arriens and Helen Prejean
Average review score:

I learned a lot from this book
I am 16 years old and I think this book was one of the best books I have ever read.I don't read very much but I read this book in about 3 hours. It tells you the truth about being on death row. And has changed my mind about the death penalty. I am going to recommend this book to everyone I know.

An Excellent book that Everyone should read!
This is an excellent book for everyone who has any interest in the Death Penalty. The letters in the book will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you scream! This book is compiled in such a beautiful way that it makes you appreciate that although some of these people may have committed horrible crimes, they are still human, and still have feelings. I have had the pleasure and honor of writing to one of the inmates profiled in this book, and it has been an experience I will never forget

A powerful & startling insight into society's inhumanity.
This is the nearest you will ever be to the lowest echelons of hell - read "Welcome to Hell" and weep for the discarded and unwanted members of our throw away society. This is Death Row's own voice - the voice of men who have been shunned and abandoned, sometimes by their own families, whose lives are deemed to be worthless and yet who show through these writing that they retain their essential humanity and still have much to offer

Blacked Out: Dilemmas of Race, Identity, and Success at Capital High
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (February, 1996)
Author: Signithia Fordham
Average review score:

Culture of poverty? Cultural defiencies? Not acc to Fordham.
I read _Blacked Out_ as part of a graduate program in urban education. It is the best of all the many books I have read in all of my coursework. It doesn't offer easy answers, or in fact many answers at all, it just states the problem. Until we can agree on the problem & acknowlege it, how can the solutions be found?

Like the other reviewer, I suggest you read this book.

Race and Culture in an American High School
This is a fabulous book. Passionate, eloquent, analytical and self-reflexive, it belongs on the shelves of everyone who has some interest in race, education or in modern anthropological investigation. While certainly scholarly, her writing is open and accessible to a general audience. Some background in social science is probably helpful however,

Fordham examines the cultural context for the phenomenon of inner-city African American high-school students labelling academic success as "acting white". She argues that a complex and contradictory set of messages are internalized by black students so that academic success has become associated with a cultural milieu that devalues and stigmatizes African American culture and African American individuals.

Over the course of two years, Fordham interviews both high-achieving and low-achieving students, their teachers, parents and school officials. She does not spare anyone: the racism of mainstream U.S. society, the contradictory messages sent by African-American parents, teachers and administrators, students own dilemmas regarding peer pressure and the "simple" certainties of youth. Paticularly valuable is her discussion of the differences within the student population in terms of scholastic achievement, degree of attachment to the American Dream and gender. While she offers no easy solutions, Fordham provides essential deep background and analysis to a host of issues, especially the continuing failure of education to meet the needs of young black men. One might add that similar issues can be seen at work in other populations in crisis in other parts of the U.S. and elsewhere in the colonial world.

Fordham's work raises disturbing questions for anyone interested in education as a way to achieve social justice. As someone who has taught in a variety of different academic and racial contexts, I believe her conclusions are sound. Much as we would like to believe otherwise, race plays an overwhelming part in defining the moral and social universes of young "minority" peoples. This book provides an important step in our ability to face this issue and to begin to work out appropriate and effective responses.

Methodologically, Fordham's work serves as a wonderful example of the ability to simultaneously engage with a subject analytically and yet at the same time maintain one's presence (with all the conflicts that entails) as a participant in the overall cultural milieu in which the investigation takes place. Fordham discusses issues of representation, the anthropology of the familiar and the responsibilities of socially-conscious anthropology with humility, grace and wisdom. To anyone who has had problems confronting the legacy and practice of anthropology, I would simply say, "Read this book".

Building And Financing An E-Commerce Venture

ThisBook Is a Winner
Marc Kramer tells us all how to start and build a new business. Excellent writing! Excellent thinking! This book gives sound advice from identifying good opportunities to closing the deal.

Norbert Aubuchon

More important than ever
This book could not have been more timely. Given the radical changes in the market for internet based busineses, it was about time that someone wrote a straight shooting book on how an e-commerce business should be built.

The beauty of Kramer's book is it's practical, hands on approach. I found that it serves as a virtual cookbook on how to do things the right way.

Thank you for this great book.

Business Capital for Women: An Essential Handbook for Entrepreneurs
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (19 June, 1996)
Authors: Emily Card and Adam Miller
Average review score:

A roadmap for getting money for business
From complicated terms such as "IPO's" to how to borrow from your family, this book takes you through the steps. The chapter on using networking to locate capital was really interesting, with little tips like marking the cards you get with the date and a note. My only complaint is that the book needs internet addresses. But the information in the back of the book listing resources is invaluable.

Even though I am a man, I found this book to be invaluable.
Starting a small business has been very difficult for me. Finding the answers I need to my questions has been a challenge. This book provided me specific, step-by-step information about how to obtain the money I needed for my business. Surprisingly, money was available for me, but without this book, I would never have found it. If you want money for your business, read this one-of-a-kind book.

The Business of Special Events: Fundraising Strategies for Changing Times
Published in Paperback by Pineapple Pr (February, 1998)
Authors: Harry A. Freedman and Karen Feldman
Average review score:

A wealth of practical tips, tricks, and techniques
Collaboratively written by professional non-profit organization fundraiser Harry A. Freedman and Florida-based journalist Karen Feldman, The Business Of Special Events: Fundraising Strategies For Changing Times is a step-by-step guidebook that effectively instructs the reader in every step of organizing a successful fundraising effort in today's technological era. Individual chapters specifically address how to create a balanced budget; secure corporate sponsorship; maintain accurate records; get serviceable publicity; provide food, beverages, and entertainment at fundraising gatherings; and more. A wealth of practical tips, tricks, and techniques make The Business Of Special Events a top-notch and highly recommended resource.

What a how-to guide!
I purchased this book several years ago and I still refer to it whenever I am planning a special event. Freedman & Feldman provide a guide that literally lays the groundwork for conducting a successful special event (I hope that is not a Kent Dove title). Every subject from selecting the right event to post-event evaluation is covered in this resource.

Great pains are taken to illustrate the areas discussed and tips abound throught the book. I found the samples of event materials particularly useful in gaining an understanding of some of the principles that are illustrated.

The Business of Special Events is a must have edition to your library. A great resource for volunteers, chairpersons, staff and Board. I completly agree with George R. Reis, Editor, Fundraising Management when he says "When other writers discuss special events, they often quote Harry Freedman. This book is the final word on the subject."

Excellent book on the Canadian department of Justice
Professor Swainger has written an excellent book on the creation of the Canadian department of Justice.

"The federal Department of Justice was established by John A. Macdonald as part of the Conservative party's program for reform of the parliamentary system following Confederation. Among other things, it was charged with establishing national institutions such as the Supreme Court and the North West Mounted Police and with centralizing the penitentiary system. In the process, the department took on a position of primary importance in post-Confederation politics. This was particulary so up to 1878, when Confederation was 'completed'".

Cancer Happens: Coming of Age with Cancer (Capital Discoveries Book)
Published in Hardcover by Capital Books Inc (01 May, 2003)
Author: Rebecca Gifford
Average review score:

Revealing
This book was so revealing and raw...I knew battling cancer was a huge and difficult process, but I had no idea the range and depth of emotions/issues that a person has to deal with, and especially at such a weird age. The book was hilarious, entertaining, heart-breaking, and hopeful all at the same time. A great read for anyone, but especially for those who are battling cancer or love someone who is.

Honest, Humorous and Heart Warming
Finally someone who conquers cancer with a sharp tongue, a quick wit and without a bunch sap. Cancer Happens is the first book I've read about cancer where I was laughing one minute, then biting my nails and then sobbing like no 31 year old man should ever admit. Ms. Gifford pulls no punches. She lets you inside to see all of her pain, sorrow, bitchiness, fear, and frustration -- and it's funny. She makes you feel like you're sitting right next to her at the bar after support group meetings downing margaritas -- and you don't want her to stop talking. A great read about living life to the max no matter what gets in your way.

Capital budgeting : planning and control of capital expenditures
Published in Unknown Binding by Prentice-Hall ()
Author: John J. Clark
Average review score:

Hard to find, keep it on your Library
The content is very clear, the exercises are complete and there are lots of examples. I specially like the cases based on real businesses. I used this book with an Advanced Finance class of my MBA program.
For those who like modeling there is a section dedicated to LP, IP and GP, very well explained but no Excel or LINDO solutions though.
If you are one that have fun with decision sciences, you can go ahead and solve them using solver or LINDO.
Overall, I recommend it for those looking to keep a good Capital Budgeting book.
